Spring Fishing on Lake Eufaula

Spring Fishing on Lake Eufaula

Spring is one of the best times of the year to fish at Lake Eufaula (also called Walter F. George Lake). Fish move shallow to spawn and feed heavily, so both bank and boat anglers do well. 🎣

🎯 Best Fish to Target in Spring

1. Largemouth Bass

  • Peak months: March–May

  • Bass move from deeper water into coves, flats, and shallow cover to spawn.

  • Early spring: staging on points and rock in 5–15 ft.

  • Spawn: 2–4 ft shallow around grass, wood, and docks.

Good lures

  • Spinnerbaits

  • Bladed jigs / chatterbaits

  • Jerkbaits

  • Plastic worms

  • Squarebill crankbaits

Where to look

  • Secondary points leading into spawning coves

  • Riprap banks and dam areas

  • Brush piles and docks

  • Shallow grass flats

2. Crappie (very popular here)

  • Peak spawn: March–April

  • Move into 2–5 ft of water near wood, brush, docks, and vegetation.

Best baits

  • Small crappie jigs

  • Live minnows

  • Light line (4–8 lb test)

3. Bluegill / Panfish

  • Start getting active in late spring, especially around mayfly hatches, which can trigger feeding frenzies.

⏰ Best Time of Day

  • Early morning: topwater and shallow bite

  • Late afternoon / evening: fish move up again

  • Overcast warming days are often the best for bass.

📍 Spring Spots Around the Lake

Good areas anglers commonly focus on:

  • Creek mouths and coves

  • Shallow grass flats

  • Cypress trees and laydowns

  • Riprap near bridges and the dam

  • Brush piles on points

Simple spring game plan (works for most people):

  1. Start on secondary points near spawning coves with a spinnerbait or crankbait.

  2. Move shallow (2–4 ft) with Texas-rig worm or jig around wood/grass.

  3. If targeting crappie, fish brush or docks with minnows.
